Bobby D's Blog - The KC Update
So I was bored last night and decided to Google myself. Isn’t that what guys do when they are bored? Anywho - what I found was pretty cool – on Google I have my own sub category, Bob DeVries Baseball. Yes I am bragging a bit about this, Charlie is now saying “a bit – ha.” Actually Charlie has been joking that she needs a pin to pop my big ole head from all the cool stuff from this summer. But for this doofus having my own Google sub-category is very cool.

Since I am so far behind now on blogging I will jump around a bit and try and get caught up with the first thing being my August 30th game in Kansas City with my good friends Forrest and Nancy.

To set the stage – I met Forrest way back in 2001 when we were both working for a suck ass company that shall remain nameless. The SAC (Suck Ass Company) transferred us both to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia to start up a new plant. Forrest and I along with Owen (the Big O) became great friends. We would golf every weekend and would try to get to B-Dubs (Buffalo Wild Wings) at least 2 times a month to play trivia. If I remember correctly I usually won at trivia as for golf – who knows, we were usually drinking which leads me to my first Forrest story…

…it was a hot August day my friends as Forrest and I set out on a round of golf. We teed off at 1 pm during the hottest part of the day. Since it was so hot we brought our own beer and as we soon found out, the course we were playing (and the one my home was on) didn’t allow beer from outside. Well we put an ice chest under my deck filled with beer and after we played the 5th hole stopped by my home to grab a few beers. Somehow the general manager of the course found out we had illegal beer and he banned us from playing the course ever again. I was now banned from playing the golf course I lived on for having a beer – worst Heineken I ever had. Luckily for me the golf course went bankrupt that winter and the new owners fired the GM and I was unbanned, debanned - teach, we need a ruling here – and I could play the course again.

Ok back to the KC game. I fly into Kansas City the morning of the 30th and drive out to Forrest and Nan’s home which is out in Kansas somewhere about 30 miles from the airport. To get there you drive out I-70 to the middle of nowhere and hang a left to the middle of middle of nowhere and that‘s where they live on 20 some odd acres in a beautiful home with a lake and a dock on the lake and a yacht with a captain. Ok so I embellished a bit – there is no captain for the yacht. As Nan was giving me a tour of their home, she showed me the cracked windows from where a tornado got just a bit too close to their home and cracked some windows. Later Forrest told me he has “keggers” (parties with beer for those of you in Utah) during tornado season. They hang out on the front porch, have some beer and watch tornados go zooming by their home which leads me to Forrest and Nan story number two…

…Forrest and Nan had a great home in West Virginia right on the Potomac River. During the summer they would have cookouts and even hosted a dog birthday party where we all brought our dogs and let them roam the 6 plus acres they lived on. Every December they host a White Elephant party. That’s a party where everyone brings a gift, either something good or bad, and thru the opening of the gift phase you either steal a gift that has been opened or open something. At the end of the night every person leaves with a gift. One year Shawn left with an enema bag. Well this one year Nan and Shawn started sampling all of the alcohol at the party including the Jell-O mold shots. These were not just any type of mold shots but molded in the form of a Brett Favre text photo, if you get what I mean. The rest of the story has to do with “losing your lunch” and the enema bag but I will leave it at that.

Back to the KC game – we got to the ballpark a bit early and decided to have a few beers, Heinekens again. The attached photo is Forrest and Nan showing the proper way to tailgate in Kansas City, always bring your own dumpster is Nan’s philosophy. The game itself I can’t really remember. We had a great time catching up and reliving some funny times in our lives. In the 5th inning I noticed that in our section there were no empty seats with the exception of the ones next to us and I thought how fitting that this was the only “empty” seat.

Forrest, Nan, The Big O, Shawn and I were great friends in West Virginia. I look back now and think none of us would have survived the SAC without each other. I know that Nan and Shawn helped each other out with living in West "By god" Virginia. Over the years we have all moved on in life - Forrest and Nan in middle of the middle of Nowhere, Kansas, the Big O and Melinda in Michigan and me in Columbus. We all haven’t been together since the Big O’s wedding in March of 2007. I think it’s time we remedy that next summer; I might have an idea or 2 that would be perfect.

Well that about does it for today’s edition of “As Bob Types”. Check back in a few days – yes days for the next episode as our hero visits the West Coast including Oakland and lives to tell about it. So for now this is so long and good bye where I am wondering how many people Googled themselves after reading the opening paragraph? Fun – wasn’t it?
